This is a replica of a 1570 Nocturlabe and Tide Computer signed by Humphrey Cole. Cole was the first English instrument maker to learn the trade from Flemish immigrants in the last years of the Tudor dynasty. The original is in the British Museum in London.
Legend has it that the Nocturlabe was invented by Raimund Lill to administer doses of medicine to patients at night. The Nocturlabe is a star clock used to obtain the time of night using fixed stars in the sky.
The tide computer is used to determine the time of the tides. Dial settings include wind direction, number of days after new moon or age of the moon, and tide indicator dial.
